Immerse yourself in Japan’s oldest hot springs at Dogo Onsen Main Building, where history and healing live on
Located in the center of Dogo Onsen town is the Dogo Onsen Main Building, a public bathhouse that opened in 1894. The building, designed by castle carpenter Sakamoto Matahachiro, is a three-story wooden building with a turret, which was rare even at the time, giving it an irresistible sense of grandeur. In 1994, it became the first active public bathhouse in Japan to be designated an Important Cultural Property, making it a day-trip hot spring spot with great architectural value.
The Dogo Onsen Main Building, a symbol of Dogo Onsen, boasting a history of approximately 3,000 years, is attractive for its architectural beauty as a three-story wooden building built in the Meiji era and its soft, natural hot spring water. Among these, the Kami no Yu Kashita is an open-air bath beloved by locals, where immersing yourself in a space decorated with Tobe ware ceramic panel paintings will relax your mind and body. Open from 6am, so a bath in the early morning tranquility is exceptional. After your bath, you can enjoy a stroll around the retro hot spring town, a relaxing moment that could be said to be the starting point of any trip to Matsuyama.
