Ishibutai Kofun is one of Japan’s largest megalithic tombs, located in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture. Believed to be the burial site of Soga no Umako, a powerful statesman of the 6th century, the tomb consists of massive stone slabs weighing approximately 2,300 tons.
Visitors can explore the exposed stone chamber, which was originally covered by an earthen mound. The site is especially stunning in spring, when cherry blossoms and rapeseed flowers bloom around the tomb, creating a picturesque contrast.
Accessible via the “Akakame” sightseeing bus or a 25-minute walk from Kintetsu Asuka Station, the entrance fee is 300 yen, with discounts available through special tickets. Nearby, visitors can enjoy local specialties at “Asuka no Yumeichi” and traditional dishes at “Yumeichi Chaya.”
